There is a lot that can go wrong with home improvement projects. Remodeling or fixing up your home can make it a much nicer place to live and can raise your property value, if you do it correctly. This is a bit of advice from Thornton Home Improvement Inc have put together for you to keep in mind on your next home improvement weekend. If you don't want to have a toilet that won't stop running, try checking the flapper valve. Flapper valves act as rubber seals for the tank and allow water in and out. Pull the siphon from the tank and examine the valve. If it's dirty, clean it. If its broken, replace the valve with a new one.

Hiring a professional organizer for a home storage makeover, can do wonders for your home's look. Most of us have catch all areas throughout the house, where items tend to go to die. We all have areas that we look at and say that we'll straighten it out tomorrow. A professional organizer can suggest changes you can make to avoid these problem areas and make your home more efficient. Buying used chairs with bad upholstery on the seat portion isn't all bad. A lot of times, you can easily remove the seat, take out the staples holding the stretched fabric across the cushion and switch it out. You can mix match any fabric of your choice, and staple it back to the bottom with a heavy duty stapler.

Storage projects are an excellent way to get your feet wet in the home improvement process. If you have a broom closet in your home, consider making it into a small pantry. It is easy to attach small racks to the inside of the door and create a place for canned goods and spices. If you are able to add a deeper shelf, you can also store boxes or kitchen appliances that don't see much use.  A great home improvement tip is to call local repair services and shop around for the best deal. By shopping around, you'll have more of an awareness of who you're doing business with, and you'll be more likely to find the right person for the job. This can be a great way to make sure you're getting quality work done.

Try prints to brighten up a room. Pick bold colors and interesting designs to make the room pop out and shine. Leopard or zebra prints can pack a punch in moderation. A well-built, immaculate front door can raise a property's value by up to 10%. You can customize your door with new knobs or locks, which are fairly inexpensive. There are many options as far as finishes and shapes. To save on energy costs, consider adding a series of small fluorescent lighting fixtures under your cabinetry. These lights consume less energy than your overhead light and can cast a glowing light on the counter surface that is ideal for preparing food or illuminating a richly colored counter top or decorative back splash area.

A leaky toilet can waste as much as fifty gallons of water in a single day. To determine whether or not your toilet has a hidden leak, remove the lid of the tank and place just a few drops of colored dye into the toilet's tank, but do not flush. If you notice dye seeping into the toilet bowl, this indicates that you do have a leak.
Many home builders save money on construction costs by installing only solid wood or particleboard cabinets that do not have any type of hardware. It is easy to find the knobs, pulls or handles you need at any good hardware store. You can find whatever style you want and get them installed right away.

Unless your carpet is very worn or outdated, try steam cleaning it before replacing it. If your goal is to sell your house, all you need to do is make a positive first impression. Often cleaning carpets will achieve this goal, and replacing them becomes unnecessary. Hiring a professional steam cleaner can save you thousands over replacing carpet throughout a house. For a unique look in the kitchen, plus extra counter space, consider converting an old dresser into an island. The drawers make excellent storage for utensils and tools, and the top can be covered with granite, marble, butcher block or laminate, to match or coordinate with your existing counter tops. Add casters to the legs for a mobile work space that can tuck against a wall if needed.

To add appeal to your home and increase its value, consider replacing your existing shingles with architectural shingles. Also known as dimensional shingles, these shingles can simulate the textures of natural substances like slate or wood, and they resist wind better than regular shingles, making them an ideal choice if your home is located in a region that sees high winds. You can make any room look much more sophisticated by painting it in an original way. It's cheap to do such a project, while the rewards are plentiful.

Before demolishing any part of your home, you should do some research. You might think jumping right into demolition with a quickness is ideal. Always check first for electrical wires or components that are still attached. The cost of removal may be expensive, which means you should double check.

Update your kitchen. Something like this can increase the value of your home. This can be a simple project or a large one depending on what you want to do. If you just want to install a new sink that can be quite simple to do. Look at what you can fit into your budget before jumping into it. When looking to save money on energy, adding new energy efficient fixtures is an easy home improvement that can be done without a contractor. Adding energy efficient ceiling fan will not only add beauty, but will cut down on your cooling cost. Simply trading out your old incandescent bulbs to more energy efficient fluorescent ones can save you on energy costs.

As you can see, home improvement has the potential to do a lot of good in the aesthetics of your home as well as it's market value. Making some wise investments may really pay off in the long run and make your home more energy efficient and valuable.
